Overview of Becoming a Video Game Tester

Video game testing is a career that many gamers aspire to. It sounds like the perfect gig; you get to play video games all day and get paid for it! The job is not for everyone though, especially those that think it is an easy thing to do. Testing is actually a repetitive and intense process, in which you must constantly be thinking about potential bugs and ways to improve the game. It is also necessary that you take specific actions to ensure that you can be as great a tester as possible, and doing this will lock you in for future jobs. Remember, testing is a well paid position, and you do not want to lose it easily.

When you get a video game testing job, you are given orienting material that gives you information about the game you will be testing, what is expected, and other pertinent facts. Make sure to read this in detail and be sure you understand everything. If you have any questions, call the person in charge and talk with them until you are clear about every detail. Knowing what you need to do is critical towards being able to perform well, and even if you need to read a lot to prepare, this is something that is just part of the job.

It can be easy to get caught up in a game and forget your job. When you play video games recreationally, it is an entirely different experience. During the period you are testing a game, you have to step out of your regular mindset. At all times, you have to remember what you are doing, and try to find every way possible to make improvements to the game. You should not think of this as difficult, as this work is nothing compared to what programmers and designers need to do to actually implement those changes. However, your work is still very important, because without testers, the programmers do not know what to do, so you can see how your work truly is critical.
